March 13, 2020:
Today hitching in Hilo was awesome. It was Lui’s first time hitching so I showed him the ropes. It rained on us the whole day and we walked around 5 miles to get to Rainbow Falls! Eventually, it hit me that we can have fun no matter what apparent circumstances were occurring. After checking out the falls, we made hitching back home into a fun time by dancing our way to the highway to some funky beats. Lui even got me a giant leaf umbrella that almost every stranger wanted. It started raining even harder so we just kept on dancing. Lui found a GIANT squash and he had a brilliant idea of making it look like I have a baby, so we wrapped it up in his jacket and got a ride in seconds. I remember at one point standing across the street from a bus station.
I said, “You know, I would rather stand in the rain for an hour while I hitch for a ride than take a bus… I’m not sure why.”
He reminded me that it’s all about the experience and the people you get to meet. So true. Each ride was fun and filled with smiles; we got to meet some amaaazing people throughout the journey! It was a divine adventure, indeed.
